Melbourne's Metro Tunnel is an impressive feat of engineering, but it's not the complete solution to the city's transport woes. While the tunnel itself is a marvel, with its underground stations resembling 'underground cathedrals', the current service frequency is a limiting factor. The tunnel's opening is a significant step forward, providing faster travel times and improved connections, especially for those heading to hospitals, universities, and the Botanic Gardens. However, the limited service hours and infrequent off-peak train schedules mean that the promise of a seamless, 'turn-up-and-go' public transport system is still a distant dream. The Metro Tunnel is a great start, but it's just the beginning. To truly transform Melbourne's transport network, the government needs to focus on extending the service hours and increasing the frequency of trains, especially during off-peak times. This would encourage Melburnians to leave their cars behind and embrace the train as a viable and attractive mode of transport. The current service is a step in the right direction, but it's not enough. The city needs a comprehensive plan that includes the construction of the Suburban Rail Loop, which would provide a more integrated transport network, and the Metro Two project, which would address the public transport deserts in Melbourne's western suburbs. Additionally, the long-awaited Melbourne Airport Rail project, currently set to open in 2033, is a crucial part of the city's future transport infrastructure. While the Metro Tunnel is a significant achievement, it's essential to recognize that it's just the first step in a much larger process of updating, improving, and extending Melbourne's public transport system.
