The Washington Nationals' off-season moves have left fans feeling a bit deflated, especially when it comes to free agency. While the team is making strides with new technologies, the lack of high-profile player signings has disappointed many. The Nationals only signed two players to major league contracts, both of whom are low-risk, low-cost additions to their starting rotation. Foster Griffin, an intriguing left-hander, is attempting an MLB comeback after playing in Japan, and Miles Mikolas provides veteran depth.
But here's where it gets intriguing! There were rumors that the Nationals were interested in signing free agent first baseman Rhys Hoskins, a former NL East rival with the Phillies who spent last season with the Brewers. Hoskins, however, chose a different path, and it's not with the Nationals.
In a surprising move, Hoskins signed a minor league deal with the Cleveland Guardians, with a potential $1.5M payout if he makes their Opening Day roster, which seems likely. This deal has left many scratching their heads, as Hoskins is a proven big league slugger. So, why did he settle for such a low-cost contract?
It's a two-way street, as they say. Perhaps Hoskins wasn't keen on joining a team with a recent history of poor performance, especially when compared to the Guardians, who won the AL Central last year and consistently perform well in the American League.
There's still a slim chance Hoskins could join the Nationals later in the season, but it's highly unlikely at this point. The Nationals are expected to go with a combination of Luis Garcia Jr., Andres Chaparro, and newcomers Matt Mervis and Abimelec Ortiz at first base.
