West Ham United seems to be making a significant move as they prepare to part ways with Lucas Paqueta, and it raises an intriguing question: is there a perfect replacement already available in the Premier League?
The decision to let an unhappy player like Paqueta leave the club appears to be a wise one. For some time now, the 28-year-old midfielder has not been performing at the level that initially captured fans’ attention in the Premier League. Speculation about his potential return to Brazil has loomed over him, and it's evident that he hasn't been able to recapture his form. With manager Nuno Espirito Santo needing players who are fully committed and ready to contribute, moving on from Paqueta seems to be in the best interest of both parties. While it may not be ideal, at least Paqueta won’t be joining another team within the Premier League.
According to a report by Sky Sports, West Ham has come to a verbal agreement for Paqueta’s transfer to Flamengo, confirming earlier reports of an offer. The deal, which is valued at approximately £35.8 million (or €41.25 million), is expected to be finalized in writing within the next 24 hours. The report states, "West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta looks set to get his wish to return to Brazil after a £35.8m deal was verbally agreed to join Flamengo." Although two other Premier League clubs have expressed interest in signing Paqueta this month, he has made it clear that his heart is set on returning home to Brazil, having communicated his wishes to the club earlier this month.
Given Paqueta's recent decline in performance, it's hardly surprising that the transfer fee has dropped from the £51 million that West Ham originally paid Lyon in 2022. In this case, it may be more pragmatic for West Ham to accept a loss but ensure they secure enough funds to find a suitable replacement. Fortunately, there is a strong candidate available—but there’s a catch.
Currently facing challenges at Aston Villa, Harvey Elliott's loan from Liverpool has turned into a frustrating experience. After being named player of the tournament at the Under-21 European Championships last summer, the 22-year-old was poised for success. However, with the arrival of Florian Wirtz at Liverpool, Elliott’s situation has become increasingly complicated. Despite his potential, he has struggled to make an impact at Villa, partly due to the form of teammate Morgan Rogers and a complicated contract situation that limits his playing time.
Elliott would indeed be an ideal replacement for Paqueta. Unfortunately for West Ham, they cannot sign him until the summer window opens because he has already played for two different teams this season. Premier League and UEFA regulations stipulate that a player can only represent two clubs during the same campaign, which means Elliott would need to step outside of European football to play again this season. Furthermore, there's a £35 million clause attached to his loan, contingent upon him playing a certain number of games for Villa, although manager Unai Emery has indicated that this is unlikely to happen.
For less than what they will receive from the Paqueta transfer, West Ham could acquire a player eager to silence critics and who has already shown he can handle the pressures of the Premier League. However, they will have to wait until the summer to make that a reality.
What do you think? Should West Ham hold out for Elliott, or are there better options available? Share your thoughts in the comments!
