Nintendo’s official GameCube NSO pad is fantastic for docked play, but let’s face it—handheld gaming feels like an afterthought. The Joy-Con 2 button layout just can’t replicate the magic of the original GameCube controller. But here’s where it gets exciting: a new Kickstarter project called the abxylute N9C has gamers buzzing, and it’s already fully funded. This Switch 2 grip promises to bring the GameCube experience to handheld mode like never before.
The N9C is designed to wrap around the Switch 2 screen, replacing the Joy-Cons with a split controller that mimics the GameCube’s iconic layout. It connects via the console’s USB-C port for lightning-fast response times, features swappable joystick gates for both 8-way and circular movement, and even includes gyro controls and four customizable back buttons. But here’s where it gets controversial: while the N9C nails the GameCube aesthetic—especially with its nostalgic purple shade—purists might notice slight deviations in the d-pad and stick design. Is it a dealbreaker, or a small price to pay for portable Wind Waker sessions? You decide.
If the N9C’s bold design isn’t your cup of tea, abxylute is also offering the N6 grip, a more conventional alternative. This one ditches the GameCube nostalgia for a sleeker look, featuring hall-effect joysticks, front-facing speakers, and all the same customization options. It’s not as nostalgic, but it might be the comfier choice for marathon gaming sessions. Available in black or purple, it lets you choose just how much of a throwback you want.
And this is the part most people miss: Both grips are currently only available through Kickstarter, with early backers scoring a Super Early Bird discount. For $618 HKD (approx. £59 / $79), you can snag an N6 grip with an April 2026 delivery, or shell out $696 HKD (approx. £66 / $89) for the N9C, arriving in June. But here’s the question: Are these grips worth the wait and the price tag? Or is Nintendo missing a trick by not offering a better handheld solution themselves?
