SpaceX's Starlink Recalls Power Cables Due to Waterproofing Issue
SpaceX is offering free replacement power cables for customers who purchased the Performance (Gen 3) dish and/or Advanced Power Supply Units. The company identified a quality-control issue with the waterproofing on the cables, which may make affected units more susceptible to water ingress if submerged or exposed to powerful water jets.
The issue became apparent when the cabling was used in wet environments, and to ensure product reliability, customers are advised to install the replacement AC or DC cables included in the package for each affected Advanced Power Supply Unit on their account.
This recall comes as the Advanced Power Supply has mysteriously disappeared from the online Starlink shop, where it was originally sold for $200. The quality-control issue might explain why the product was delisted, and SpaceX hasn't immediately responded to a request for comment.
This development highlights the importance of rigorous quality control in product design and manufacturing, especially for devices intended to operate in harsh environments. It also underscores the need for transparent communication between companies and their customers about potential issues with their products.
