A Chicago suburb named the biggest boomtown in Illinois
A recent study by GOBankingRates has revealed the biggest boomtown in every state, and a Chicago suburb has claimed the top spot in Illinois. The study examined cities with populations between 25,000 and 500,000 using U.S. Census Bureau data from 2015 and 2023. Researchers calculated eight-year changes in population and per capita income to determine the city in each state with the largest population increase.
In Illinois, Plainfield was named No. 1. The southwest suburb spans parts of Kendall and Will counties and reported 44,762 residents as of the 2020 Census. The 2023 total population is 45,705, with a per capita income of $53,675. The % change in population (2015-23) is 11.9%, and the % change in per capita income (2015-23) is 43.2%.
While Plainfield might be the biggest boomtown in Illinois, it's not the largest in the United States. Fulshear, Texas, a city of around 40,000 residents outside of Houston, secured the nation's highest spot; the community's population has grown a whopping 736% over the past eight years.
