The Older Individuals after Nut Supplementation (COINS) study, published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, found that older Australians who incorporated a heaped tablespoon of natural peanut butter into their daily routine for six months experienced significant improvements in muscle power and protein levels, without any weight gain.

Associate Professor Sze-Yen Tan, who led the research, emphasized the practical benefits of peanut butter for older adults at risk of falls due to muscle weakness. "Exercise and resistance training are common strategies, but our study shows that peanut butter can be a valuable addition to enhance muscle power and improve overall nutrition," she explained.

But here's where it gets controversial... The study involved 120 community-dwelling adults aged 66 to 89 years, randomly divided into two groups. One group consumed 43 grams of natural peanut butter daily, while the other maintained their usual diet. At the end of the trial, the peanut butter group performed better in the five-time sit-to-stand test, indicating increased muscle power.

"Being able to complete the test faster is a sign of greater muscle power, which is crucial for older adults to maintain their independence and quality of life," Associate Professor Tan added. "It also reduces the risk of falls, a common cause of loss of independence and premature death."

And this is the part most people miss... The increased protein and unsaturated fat intake from peanut butter did not lead to weight gain. This is a significant finding, as it challenges the notion that older adults need to avoid certain foods to maintain their weight.

The Peanut Institute in the United States funded the study, and Associate Professor Tan highlighted the accessibility and affordability of peanut butter compared to traditional oral nutritional supplements, which can be costly and unappealing to older adults.

"We often overlook simple, natural foods like peanut butter when it comes to nutritional supplements. This study proves that peanut butter can be a delicious and effective alternative," she said.

Peanut butter is naturally packed with protein, healthy fats, and antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and muscle breakdown. Its smooth texture also makes it an ideal choice for older adults with dental issues who may struggle with whole nuts.

Researchers are now planning further studies to explore the potential of combining nut consumption with resistance training to achieve even broader improvements in physical function among older adults.
