Max Verstappen Unveils New Racing Number Ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 Season
As Formula 1 gears up for one of the most significant regulatory overhauls in its recent history, changes are on the horizon for nearly every team and many drivers, including Max Verstappen.
In a nod to tradition and following FIA regulations, Lando Norris, who triumphantly claimed the title of 2025 F1 World Champion, will don the coveted number 1 next season, a number that has been associated with Verstappen since 2022. This transition left Verstappen at a crossroads regarding his own racing number.
The four-time World Champion had two choices: either revert back to his previous number, 33, which he used from 2015 to 2021, or select a completely new number. After careful consideration, Verstappen has officially announced that he will race under the number 3 for the upcoming 2026 season.
A New Number for a New Era
This change signifies a new chapter in Verstappen's career, which many fans view as the third distinct era of his impressive tenure with Red Bull Racing. He initially raced with the number 33, transitioned to the number 1 following his championship victories, and is now opting for his favorite number, 3, as he embarks on this new phase.
The choice of the number 3 carries emotional weight for Verstappen, as it was famously worn by his close friend and former F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo throughout most of his career.
Historically, F1 drivers were restricted from changing their numbers except during championship-related occasions, such as adopting the number 1 after winning a title. Even then, players were expected to return to their original numbers if they failed to defend their championship. However, this rule underwent a transformation at the start of the current season.
Verstappen’s situation is further complicated by regulations concerning retired numbers, which meant he would have needed to wait another season to officially claim Ricciardo's old number. Fortunately for him, he reached out to Ricciardo to obtain permission to use number 3, and the Australian driver graciously consented.
The Importance of an F1 Driver Number
While a driver's number does not confer any actual advantage, it holds substantial significance in shaping the identity and brand of many F1 drivers both on and off the track. Verstappen became widely recognized by the number 33 before adopting the number 1, just as fans associate Lando Norris with number 4, Charles Leclerc with number 16, and Lewis Hamilton with number 44.
Many drivers leverage their numbers to develop merchandise and even establish businesses around them; for instance, Hamilton has created initiatives like Mission44 and +44. Additionally, driver numbers are pivotal to team merchandise beyond individual branding, serving as a shorthand for drivers across various platforms, including helmets, apparel, collectibles, and social media. Examples include MV33 for Verstappen, LH44 for Hamilton, CL16 for Leclerc, and LN4 for Norris — all of which will see some changes come 2026.
As Formula 1 transitions into this exciting new technical era, Verstappen's shift to a new racing number is part of a broader rebranding strategy. He has also secured a groundbreaking merchandising agreement with Fanatics that coincides with this number change.
