Beware of Online Scams: Man Arrested for Targeting Holiday Seekers
The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration, but it's also a prime opportunity for fraudsters to take advantage of unsuspecting travelers. A recent arrest in Mombasa has brought attention to a growing concern: online accommodation scams.
Detectives in Nyali Sub-county have successfully apprehended a man accused of defrauding a Nairobi resident planning a family vacation. The victim, eager to secure a comfortable stay, discovered an apartment advertised online as 'Brima Mangu Apartment 2B' on December 1, 2025. After initial inquiries, the suspect, identifying himself as Brian Masika, claimed ownership of the property.
The two parties negotiated a rate of Sh6,000 per night, and the victim, confident in their choice, sent Sh24,000 for four nights to a mobile money till number provided by the suspect. However, the moment the family arrived in Mombasa, the suspect vanished, leaving them stranded and desperate for a solution.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when booking online accommodations. The DCI urges the public to remain cautious, emphasizing that not every enticing offer is legitimate. By staying alert and verifying the authenticity of online listings, travelers can protect themselves from falling victim to such scams during the festive season and beyond.
Remember, when it comes to online bookings, it's better to be safe than sorry!
