First Base Prospects to Watch in 2026: Mashing Machines (2026)

In the high-stakes world of baseball, being a first baseman is all about one thing: hitting home runs. Forget fancy fielding or blazing speed on the basepaths – it's the power in your bat that truly matters. This makes the competition fierce, a true battle of the bats. If you can't consistently deliver at the plate, your time at first base is likely to be short-lived. Even above-average hitting isn't enough; you need to be exceptional. You're constantly under pressure, with less-than-stellar defenders from other positions vying for your spot, creating a cutthroat environment. And this is the part most people miss: The game is changing, and the pressure is intensifying.

The first base position is loaded with talent, but there's a unique challenge brewing. Players from various positions are transitioning to first base, intensifying the competition. Teams are more willing to move prospects around in the minor leagues, leading to a crowded field at first base. Catchers like Samuel Basallo and Josue Briceno, third basemen like Sal Stewart and Cam Collier, and even outfielders such as Edward Florentino and Charlie Condon are all making the move. This influx of talent is creating a highly competitive landscape. In fact, in the top ten first base prospects, only Bryce Eldridge primarily played first base/DH in 2025. The others have experience in multiple positions. Since defensive skills aren't as critical for first basemen, it becomes easier to compare and rank these players based on their offensive capabilities.

Because of the necessity to hit and produce immediately, you need to be a top-tier talent to earn trust and a starting role. Even Jonathon Long, who excelled at Triple-A in 2025 and deserves a shot in the big leagues, might not get a starting role right away, as the Cubs already have Michael Busch at first. Not everyone can be the next Nick Kurtz and become an MVP candidate from the start. Some of these players could potentially reach that level, but it's a very high bar to clear.

Let's dive into some of the top prospects:

1. Samuel Basallo (BAL) - A Rising Star

Basallo was considered one of the best prospects in baseball entering 2025. After dominating Triple-A as a teenager in 2024, he continued his impressive performance in 2025, posting a .270/.377/.589 slash line (151 wRC+) with 23 home runs in just 76 games. He was called up in mid-August to preserve his rookie eligibility for 2026 and signed an 8-year, $67 million extension. While he had a brief struggle in the MLB, he still showed some power with 4 home runs in 31 games. With Adley Rutschman on the roster, Basallo won’t be the primary catcher, but his elite bat will have him in the lineup every day, whether it be at C, 1B, or DH. PLIVE+ projects him to have the highest wRC+ (147) and HR total (31) of any Orioles hitter.

2. Bryce Eldridge (SFG) - Powerhouse Potential

Eldridge entered the 2025 season as one of the most anticipated prospects. He spent most of the campaign in Triple-A despite being just 20 years old. The 6'7 first baseman has immense raw power potential, and his minor league performance seems more representative of what to expect from him long term. In 66 games with Triple-A Sacramento, Eldridge posted a slash line of .249/.322/.514 with 18 home runs, good for an eye-popping .265 ISO. His strong power numbers come with equally impressive batted-ball data, including an elite hard-hit rate (64.5%) and 90th-percentile exit velocity (108.6 mph). Recent news came out that Eldridge had wrist surgery and should be ready to go in Spring Training.

3. Edward Florentino (PIT) - The Speedy Slugger

Florentino saw his stock rise sharply in 2025. The outfielder dominated at the Complex, posting an OPS over 1.000, before continuing to impress with his power, speed, and swing decisions at Single-A. He ran a zone contact rate of nearly 90% over 54 games at the level, while posting above-average exit velocities and stealing 29 of his 35 total bases on the season. Expect him to start the year in High-A at 19, where a strong start would propel him up even further from top-25 status into the stratosphere as one of minor league baseball’s best talents.

4. Josue Briceño (DET) - A Promising Catcher
