The teams reportedly in the running are the Cubs, Padres, Orioles, and Yankees. Giunta expressed surprise that Bassitt hasn't signed yet, given the level of interest.
With these four clubs actively pursuing him, it's highly probable that a contract signing is imminent. What's particularly noteworthy is that all four teams are considered playoff contenders and possess a clear need for pitching in their rotations. This means Bassitt will face a significant decision, choosing not just a team, but a path to potential postseason glory.
Last season, Bassitt posted a solid 11-9 record with a 3.96 ERA over 32 games. His playoff performance was even more impressive, where he recorded a stellar 1.04 ERA in 7 relief appearances. This kind of production makes him a highly sought-after commodity.
And this is the part most people miss... The fact that Bassitt is still a free agent might seem a little odd, but it could also mean he's holding out for the best possible situation. What's particularly intriguing is that two of the teams showing interest – the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles – are direct rivals of the Blue Jays. MLB insider Jon Heyman has even suggested that the Orioles could be a strong contender to sign Bassitt, especially after missing out on Framber Valdez. Heyman indicated that after Valdez joined the Tigers, the Orioles might be looking at players like Zac Gallen, Lucas Giolito, and Chris Bassitt to bolster their pitching staff.
Both the Orioles and the Yankees have a clear need for starting pitchers. The Orioles, as mentioned, are looking to fill a void in their rotation, and Bassitt's ability to be a workhorse and log significant innings makes him an attractive option. The Yankees, on the other hand, could certainly use another reliable starter, particularly with key pitchers like Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon facing early-season injuries. This suggests that Bassitt is very likely to be pitching for a different team in 2026.
Now, let's talk about the Blue Jays' rotation... As Toronto heads into spring training, most of their starting rotation spots seem to be filled. However, this remains the most fascinating position group for the Blue Jays, and if injuries or performance don't naturally sort out the extra arms, the team might face difficult conversations or even trade talks.
