Snyman's Disappointment with Blitzbok Performance in Singapore
Springbok Sevens coach Philip Snyman expressed deep frustration and disappointment after his team's fourth-place finish at the HSBC SVNS Singapore on Sunday. The Blitzboks suffered a double defeat at the National Stadium, losing to France in the semifinals and then to New Zealand in the playoff for third place.
Snyman acknowledged that the team's performance fell short of their usual high standards. Despite their efforts, their execution and decision-making were not up to par, leading to a costly outcome.
South Africa's ranking dropped from the top to third on the log with 46 points after the weekend. Fiji secured their first tournament win of the 2026 World Series, climbing to the top of the table with 52 points, while New Zealand followed in second place with 48 points.
Snyman identified several areas where the team fell short, but he refused to blame the squad's lack of experience for the overall result. He introduced two players with minimal tournament experience, Luan Giliomee and Nabo Sakoyo, and acknowledged the potential impact on their performance.
Despite the setback, Snyman highlighted the positive aspects. These younger players gained valuable experience, and Luan, in his debut, faced formidable opponents like Fiji, France, and New Zealand. The team will now focus on improving their execution in Perth.
Snyman emphasized the importance of addressing their decision-making and clinical finishing, which were the biggest disappointments. The team created numerous opportunities but struggled to convert them into points, a critical factor in the narrow margins of the series.
Discipline was another area of concern. Snyman noted the team's lack of discipline, conceding two yellow cards against Fiji, a crucial factor in their defeat. They also struggled with possession, losing it too easily and frequently, hindering their ability to build cohesion in attack.
Looking ahead, the Blitzboks will face Fiji, Spain, and Argentina in Pool A of the HSBC SVNS Perth at the HBF Stadium on February 7-8. The team is committed to improving and will revisit their internal scorecard to reinforce their standards and values as the Springbok Sevens team.
