Against all odds, the Boston Celtics pulled off a stunning comeback, leaving fans on the edge of their seats! In a Thursday night showdown, the Celtics battled back from a significant deficit to defeat the Miami Heat with a final score of 119-114. The game was a rollercoaster, with the Celtics trailing for the majority of the time. But here's where the magic happened: Anfernee Simons exploded for a season-high 39 points, with a remarkable 18 of those points coming in the crucial fourth quarter. Jaylen Brown added 27 points to the Celtics' tally, while Sam Hauser contributed 17 points.
The Celtics' fourth-quarter performance was particularly impressive, outscoring Miami 36-21. This victory marked their second-largest comeback win of the season, following a 20-point deficit recovery against Indiana on December 22nd.
Simons' performance was nothing short of extraordinary, as he achieved the second-highest scoring game by a reserve player this season. Only Brice Sensabaugh of Utah scored more, with 43 points. This incredible feat made Simons only the fourth Celtics player in the last 50 years to score at least 39 points off the bench, joining the ranks of legends like Larry Bird, Todd Day, and Payton Pritchard.
On the Miami side, Norman Powell led the charge with 26 points, while Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro each scored 22 points. Andrew Wiggins added 16 points for the Heat.
The game's turning point came when Simons scored 11 consecutive points for Boston in the fourth quarter, chipping away at Miami's lead. Then, Hauser's open 3-pointer with 5:21 left in the game gave the Celtics their first lead since the opening minute. The lead changed hands a couple more times before Brown's 3-pointer with 4:05 remaining put Boston in the lead for good.
Miami's hot start, with a 28-9 run, put the Celtics in an unusual position early on. The 19-point deficit, occurring just seven minutes into the game, equaled the largest first-quarter deficit the Celtics had faced in a 304-game span, a record dating back to December 21, 2022, when they trailed Indiana by 20 points. Boston also faced a 19-point deficit against Milwaukee in the first quarter on April 9, 2024.
Interestingly, the Heat were without key players, including starting point guard Davion Mitchell (due to a left shoulder contusion) and sixth man Jaime Jaquez Jr. (sidelined by left knee soreness).
